Under Where?

It’s time we cover what to put on your bottom half for the big day!

First off, let’s leave any romantic, Victoria’s secret-like fantasies in the movies where they belong. Save the sexy little things for the wedding night, this is about showing off your body and dress to maximum potential. Foundation garments are absolutely key to pulling off the look and remaining as comfortable as you can throughout a very long day.

Here are some of our most tried-and-true, go-to pieces we’ve discovered over the years and the dresses they support.  Across all categories, go for the best flesh tone you can find to match your skin.  PSA: This IS NOT a cute place for your something blue.

Most ball gowns are pretty forgiving under the skirt and will be fine with your favorite underwear option in a flesh tone. You don’t really need to be sucked in like a sausage under a ball gown, the top fitting properly like a corset will take care of that.  I frequently recommend a thin, breathable short to prevent thigh chafing and provide sweat wicking.  I always go up a size from what the manufacturer recommends. It’s hot under all those layers and you’ll have your hands plenty full of skirt every time you need to hit the powder room.

This is our #1 most recommended underwear. It’s made of thin, breathable microfiber with no side seams or waistbands. It’s moisture wicking and gives light shaping that is invisible under almost everything.

This is a big category with a lot of variants, so here are some questions to help you decide where to start.

1.        Can your shapewear come up to under your bra line, or does it need to stop at the waist or even lower because of sheer panels?

2.       What parts are we worried about shaping?  Butt? Tummy? Legs? Belly button coverage?  All of the above?

3.       How much will an underwear line show through the fabric of the dress?  This will depend on how fitted your dress is and what it’s made out of.  Lace or tulle layers will hide a whole lot more than crepe.

Very frequently we see skirts made of crepe that you can just see every possible undergarment under, no matter how tiny or flesh tone.  Sheer cutouts that plunge from the bodice down the leg are also common. It’s usually great to try a flesh toned, seamless, microfiber thong to start with, but sometimes commando is really your best option.  A great stylist tip that’s always stuck with me is that no commando situation (especially in a wedding dress!) should really be attempted without a tampon.  And I think that about covers that…
